DEAR JEWELLERY PAL…
4267/KG Wednesday 3January 2007
‘Dear Jewellery Pal’ is a new exhibition being hosted by UCE Birmingham’s School of Jewellery, opening on Monday 12th February. The exhibition is part of a unique collaborative project between the School of Jewellery and the Idar Oberstein campus (a traditional centre for all aspects of gemstones) of the Fachhochschule Trier in Germany.
For the last two years, through the Erasmus scheme, students from Germany have come over to England to study at the School of Jewellery in Vittoria Street. Through this scheme, student Sina Emrich has developed a creative exchange project in which six students at Idar Oberstein – studying precious stones and jewellery – are paired with six at the School of Jewellery – studying BA Jewellery and Silversmithing.
Since November the pairs have been communicating via email and letter to establish themes of common interest around which designs may be generated. The German group will visit Birmingham and the pairs will meet for the first time in early February to formulate an exhibition of their experience ‘Dear Jewellery Pal’.
In March the Birmingham group will make a return visit to Idar Oberstein where they will participate in a stonecutting workshop and recreate the exhibition.
This project is an exciting development that has arisen from the Erasmus scheme, which will hopefully result in further opportunities for staff and student liaison between the centres. It has also led one of the original Erasmus exchange students from Idar Oberstein to undertake the Jewellery, Silversmithing and Related Products MA at Vittoria Street.
Details of the project are available on http://www.dear-jewellery-pal.net/
