Birmingham City University is to open its brand new two million pound Seacole West teaching wing to the Faculty of Health in Edgbaston.
As a result of the new development at its City South campus, the University will now be able to teach all of its health-related courses on one site. Previously diagnostic radiography, radiotherapy, speech and language therapy, and Foundation Degree courses in health and social care were taught at the City North campus in Perry Barr.
The new extension is part of the £30 million state-of-the-art Seacole Building which was opened in 2006, and won a Built in Quality award in 2007.
New innovative teaching facilities
The new teaching facilities includes a virtual radiotherapy suite, a radiography imaging suite, a simulated home environment for visual rehabilitation students to learn how to help those with limited or complete loss of sight, and a specialist resource room, fitted with a two-way mirror to allow Speech and Language Therapy students to review and develop effective communication skills. Students will using the new wing for the first time from Monday 12 September.
The build was overseen by the Head of the School of Health & Social Care, Stephen Wordsworth. He said: “The University is very proud of the Seacole building with its contemporary architecture in a magnificent landscape setting, designed for modern teaching and learning practices.
“This new wing is the icing on the cake of the Seacole building and will bring all the Faculty of Health’s teaching facilities and expertise under one roof. The Faculty boasts up-to-date, innovative facilities that simulate the real situations that many Health and Social Care students encounter in their practice. Therefore these resources are essential in providing our students with a hands-on opportunity to develop their skills in a safe and supportive environment".

The University currently has a limited number of places available, starting in September 2011, on some of its health and well-being courses. Recruitment is currently taking place for BSc (Hons) Adult Nursing and BSc (Hons) Mental Health Nursing. There are also places on the degree and foundation degree course in health and wellbeing (nutrition science, and individuals and communities).
