A recent Birmingham City University graduate is celebrating after securing two accolades at a European fashion competition for her menswear collection inspired by a German anatomist.
23 year-old Georgina Jenkins, from Pembrokeshire in Wales, researched the works of Japanese artists and German scientist Gunther von Hagens when designing her fashion collection entitled ‘Distort Body and Mind’.
“The pinstripes in my collection were inspired by Gunther von Hagens and his anatomy work on injecting veins with plastic”, said Georgina, who graduated from Birmingham City University’s School of Fashion and Textiles last month.
The biological preservation process invented by the anatomist is often referred to as ‘Plastination’ and Von Hagens says the process makes it possible to preserve individual tissues and organs that have been removed from the body.
Georgina’s collection impressed a panel judges at Hannover University of Applied Sciences and Arts’ annual ‘Modepreis Hannover’ competition, including Alex Krenn, Head Designer at Vivienne Westwood in London.
Georgina was awarded €1,000 on winning the ‘Best Menswear Collection’ prize and a €500 voucher for winning the ‘Audience Award’, voted for by spectators.
Courses at Birmingham City University’s School of Fashion and Textiles will be open to applicants in Clearing, from Thursday 17 August at www.bcu.ac.uk/clearing.
