Emphasis on STEM subjects in schools leaves students with lack of choice

Too much emphasis is being put on STEM subjects in schools, overshadowing other opportunities and resulting in a lack of choice for students, argues TV’s Educating Essex star teacher Stephen Drew.

Speaking at a public event hosted by Birmingham City University’s School of Education (Thursday 13 November) Mr Drew discussed recent comments made by Education Secretary Nicky Morgan, that students should opt for science and maths subjects in order to access a wider range of jobs.

Although agreeing with her comments, Mr Drew argued that this shouldn’t mean other subjects such as art and music are forgotten about:

“Simple analysis of the Government's curriculum agenda suggests they want to get rid of everything except Maths & English.

“STEM subjects are important for young people given current employment opportunities, however the focus on these subjects shouldn’t mean that arts and humanities subjects are pushed out.

“We should have the widest possible breadth on our curriculum, why can't 18 year olds do it all? Why stop them.”
