A senior journalism lecturer at Birmingham City University has expressed concerns about the new Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO), which begins its work today after replacing the discredited Press Complaints Commission.
Bob Calver, senior lecturer in Broadcast Journalism, said: “It’s not surprising that the arrival of the Independent Press Standards Organisation hasn’t been greeted by fanfares and fireworks. It isn’t the truly independent body that Lord Leveson’s inquiry into ‘phone hacking’ wanted and those who’d like to see greater controls on journalists won’t be happy.
“It is worrying that IPSO’s first chairman, Sir Alan Moses, is reported as saying that the budget he has to work with is ‘hopeless’. It seems that squeezing more funds from the industry to show it is serious about regulation will be IPSO’s first important test.”
