Birmingham City University to Host Top UK Broadcasting Awards for Student Journalists

Birmingham City University has been given the honour of hosting the Broadcast Journalism Training Council Student Journalism Awards, which are backed by all the UK’s leading broadcasters.

The country's top student journalists will be at Birmingham City University for the awards ceremony in November. It is the first time the high profile awards have been held in the city and is a celebration of the best student TV, radio and online journalism.

The BJTC, which is supported by the BBC, ITV, Sky News, ITN, Reuters, AP, Channel 4, Creative Skillset and the NUJ along with universities and colleges, has chosen Birmingham City University's new Parkside media centre for the event on Thursday 20 November.

The university is home to one of the BJTC's accredited courses and has recently invested in cutting edge technology for its radio, television and journalism facilities as part of the £118-million development.

Award nominees will come from the training body's 68 courses across the UK, currently offering unrivalled industry-led multimedia broadcast journalism training to more than 3500 students on postgraduate and BA degree courses. There are eight award categories as well as the Steve Harris Award for Student Journalist of the Year, which carries a cash prize of £500.

Executive Dean at Birmingham City University Professor David Roberts said: “All of us in the Faculty of the Arts, Design and Media are thrilled to host the annual BJTC awards ceremony. It’s a chance for us to celebrate the best in journalism education in the midst of our amazing new Parkside facilities. With the BBC's recent announcement that its training academy is to come to Birmingham, there’s never been a better time to show the profession what our city has to offer.”

BJTC Chairman Ralph Bernard said: "We are so pleased to be bringing the BJTC Student Journalism Awards to Birmingham. It is a chance to showcase the best work from the journalists of the future."
