Mooting

Two of our top mooters from the School of Law, David Meakin and James Stallard, beat the University of Liverpool in the first round of the National Oxford University Press Mooting Competition.

This competition is one of the most prestigious and popular mooting competitions in the UK. It allows for all undergraduate students to hone in their debating skills and perfect their advocacy skills. Students from the School of Law who engage with this society are able to network with lawyers and visit the Inns of Courts. Their ability to handle pressure and multi-task is put to the test as they argue a fictitious legal appeal in front of a judge and against other universities.

The rewards and experiences gained during such competitions are invaluable and will set you aside from other graduates. James Stallard, second year LLB (Hons), who was part of the victorious team commented:

"We are thrilled to have represented BCU successfully, and thank the School of Law and our Mooting Society team for their excellent support. We're now looking forward to the next round!"

Both students gave excellent performances, demonstrating their knowledge and top-notch mooting skills, beating off very able competition. They were supported by an outstanding team, in particular third year Law student Mitica Matthews, who lead the management of the moot for Team BCU.

The next national moot is at Birmingham City University on December 10, 5pm in the Magistrates Court, in the first round of the English Speaking Union Competition. We hope to see colleagues and fellow students there supporting the team.

Our mooting society is one of the most successful in the country, continually beating off rivals from elite universities.
