Prior to joining the University in 2001, Sonya had been a solicitor dealing with family law matters, then moving into litigation, dealing with employers’ liability and personal injury claims.

In 2003 Sonya became the CPE/GDL Programme Director and then became the Legal Practice Course Programme Director in 2004. Until 2011 she taught Civil Litigation, Advocacy and the Personal Injury and Clinical Negligence elective at postgraduate level.

Between 2011 and 2019 Sonya was Deputy Head of the Law School (Academic Programme Development) and School Quality Lead between 2016 and 2021.

Sonya has been a member of various Faculty and University Committees, including the cross-disciplinary working groups which created the University’s employability award, Graduate + in 2018 and the University’s Assessment Centre in 2019.

In 2014 Sonya became a Senior Fellow of Advance HE and is an Advance HE accredited External Examiner. Also in 2014 Sonya completed the University’s Master's in Education programme with Distinction.

Sonya is undertaking the Professional Doctorate in Education at the University of Nottingham.
