A graduate from Birmingham City University is celebrating after being the School of Jewellery’s very first Goblet competition winner.
Norwegian born Kine Guvag was awarded The British Allied Trades Federation (BATF), Goblet Design Competition title for her striking a-symmetrical goblet that reflects the clean lines on modern design. The HND Jewellery and Silversmithing alumni was presented with her cash prize at the Gift of the Year Awards earlier this year.
The BATF launched the competition to provide an opportunity to promote newly qualified talent in the industry. Dating back to 1954, BATF Presidency has been recognised by the addition of a solid silver goblet to the Federation’s silver collection. This collection was instigated to support and showcase craftsmanship and design.
The BATF will sponsor the design and manufacture of two unique silver goblets, designed by Kine, and will be presented to their Presidents next month.
All students and Artists in Residence at the School of Jewellery were invited to participate in the competition to have their piece in the BATF’s collection. The total budget for the design and manufacture of the sterling silver goblet was £1,000 and the brief asked for a minimum/approximate weight of 220g and a height of 17 – 22cm. Students also had to include the BATF crest and engraving of the President’s name and years of office.
The Federation looked for a design that reflects the time of its manufacture, adding to an attractive collection of distinguishable goblets with differences that reference the styles of the time. Each goblet must be of good professional quality and be able to function holding liquid. The piece can be marked with the winner’s hallmark.
Kine Guvag’s winning piece will be part spun by hand and part manufactured on the lathe. Kine’s signature/assay mark will be added to the goblet and it will be logged in the BATF archives.
Current President, Mike Hughes commented “There will be a competition this year for my goblet and next year for Michael Sweeney … then we are on track for a bi annual goblet competition! The President doesn’t receive the goblet, it is commemorative only, if he/she wants one for themselves, then they have to buy a second piece.”
