How to enrol
Some of our international students discuss some of the practical things you must do when you arrive to study at Birmingham City University including enrolment, getting a bank account and registering with a doctor.
Also view on Youtube.
You must enrol onto your course to become a recognised student of Birmingham City University. You will then be able to attend classes and use our facilities.
Enrolment forms an essential part of the Orientation Programme. Once you have accepted an offer of a place, we will send you details of when and where you need to register.
Please bring your Visa Letter transcripts with you to register. At registration we will tell you the time and place of your individual enrolment session.
There are seven stages to enrolment:
- Enrolment form
- Identity check
- Qualifications check
- Police registration check
- Payment of tuition fees
- Photograph for student ID card
- Issuing of ID card
Stage 1 – Enrolment form
You will be issued with an enrolment form that is pre-printed with your personal details, and will be asked to check it thoroughly, and let us know of any necessary amendments. You will also need to complete some sections of the form, for example, your term-time address.
Stage 2 – Identity check
We will need to see your passport. Under the new UK immigration rules, we will need to photocopy your passport for our records. Your passport will also be checked to see if you need to register with the police. You cannot enrol unless you have your passport.
Stage 3 – Qualifications check
Although the admissions team are likely to have seen copies of your qualifications during the admissions process, they will need to verify your original academic certificates and transcripts, including your English language qualifications.
You should bring certificates and transcripts for all of the qualifications that you included on your application form. Your certificates and transcripts need to be in English. If this is not the case, we advise you to have them officially translated and certified before you come to the UK as this can be an expensive process once you arrive here.
We will be unable to enrol you until you have provided all of your qualifications.
Stage 4 – Police registration check
When you arrive in the UK, the immigration officer will stamp your passport. If you are required to register with the police, this information will be clearly stated on the stamp, and during enrolment you must visit the Police Registration desk, where you will be allocated a time to register.
Stage 5 – Payment of tuition fees
The safest way of paying your fees is by banker's draft or cheque (made payable to Birmingham City University) or by credit card. If you have already paid by bank transfer in your home country, you should bring your bank transfer notification sheet from your bank to your enrolment session. Please see below for payment options.
We strongly advise that you do not carry large amounts of cash for your tuition fees with you at any time. However, if this is unavoidable and you arrive in the UK prior to the Orientation Programme, you can pay your tuition fees at the Finance Office on the 8th Floor of Baker Building at City North Campus. This money will then be safe, and you will be given a deposit receipt to take to your enrolment session.
Stages 6 and 7 – Photograph and issuing of ID cards
At the end of enrolment you will need to have your photograph taken for your Birmingham City University ID card.
For official identification our policy does not allow us to take photographs of students whose face is obscured by clothing. We do, however, provide a separate and private facility in our Academic Registry, where you will be able to have your photograph taken at a later date.
A female member of staff will be available to take these photographs. If you have any cause for concern about this, please contact us on +44 (0)121 331 5387.
Tuition fee payment options
Tuition fees are payable for each year of your course and are due at or before enrolment. We offer four payment options:
1. Payment in full
If you pay your fees in full at or before enrolment you qualify for a £300 prompt payment discount. This discount will apply to the amount you owe after any scholarships or bursaries have been deducted from your tuition fee.
2. Payment in two equal instalments
When paying in two equal instalments, 50 per cent is payable at enrolment and an invoice is subsequently issued for the balance. For students joining courses in September the balance is due by 31 January. Students joining in January must pay the balance by 30 April.
3. Payment by instalments using direct debit
To use this payment method, you or the person paying your fees must have a UK bank account. You should pay the initial amount required by banker’s draft, cheque or credit card at enrolment and then complete a direct debit form.
For students starting in September, there is an option of two further payments, one in January and one in April, or monthly payments in December, January, February, March, April and May.
Students starting in January can choose to make further payments in April and June or monthly payments in April, May, June, July, August and September.
All payments will be automatically deducted from your bank account. Please be aware that if any payments should fail, we will cancel the direct debit and the remaining balance will be payable in full.
4. Payment by a sponsor
If your tuition fees are being paid by a sponsor (e.g. a company, organisation or Government department), you will need to provide an original letter on headed paper confirming the amount of tuition fees they will pay. The sponsorship letter must be provided at enrolment and must include the following information:
- your full name and university application number
- the title of your course of study
- the address we should send an invoice to
- the exact amount your sponsor will be paying towards your tuition fees
- the sponsor’s official order number
Your sponsor will be invoiced directly for the amount of tuition fees due. Here is a template of what the sponsor's letter should look like:

You can give a copy of this to your sponsor to ensure they give you a correctly formatted letter. Please note that the tuition fee must be paid in full on invoice and cannot be paid in instalments. You should also be aware that the University will charge you directly if your sponsor subsequently fails to pay the tuition fee.
