Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) is an advanced academic degree awarded by universities.  It has become the highest award degree a student can earn and applies to graduates in a wide range of academic disciplines. The Ph.D. has become a requirement for a career as a university professor or researcher in most fields.  The requirements for award of a Ph.D. degree are students who produce specialised research at a very high degree.

The University typically requires international students to have attained a Master's degree or can demonstrate that they have acquired significant independent research skills at a Bachelor's programme.  As the UK PhD style of research is very self-directed and independent, international students should carefully consider if they have the required motivation and sustained dedication to produce a thesis after three or four years of independent self-driven research.

Those completing a PhD must submit a thesis or dissertation consisting of a suitable body of original academic research, which is in principle worthy of publication in a peer-refereed context.  A PhD candidate must defend this work before a panel of expert examiners appointed by the University and the panel decides if the submission warrants the submission with a Pass, revisions or a Fail.

If you are prepared to enquire about studying at PhD at BCU, prospective international students are encouraged to discover more within our Research section.
