Your Fee Status
Your status for fee payment purposes
We have made you an offer on the basis that you are an overseas student and therefore you will have to pay the higher rate ‘overseas’ tuition fee. If you think this is incorrect you will need to complete a Status Questionnaire to help us correctly determine your status for fee payment purposes. You must also send us copies of all relevant documents to support your claim.
You can download the Status Questionnaire or telephone to request a copy on +44 121 331 5389.
The rules relating to which students are charged the higher rate ‘overseas’ tuition fee are determined by the Government of the United Kingdom. You can be exempted from this ‘overseas’ rate by showing a ‘relevant connection’ with the United Kingdom or European Union. To demonstrate a relevant connection with the United Kingdom you must:
- have settled status in the United Kingdom that is, you must be ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom without being subject under the immigration laws to any time restriction (for example, you must have the Right of Abode or Indefinite Leave to Remain in the United Kingdom), and;
- have been ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom throughout the three-year period before the start of your course. For courses starting in September 2010 the relevant date is 1st September 2007, for courses starting in January/February 2011 the relevant date is 1st January 2008 and;
- none of this period of residence can have been wholly or mainly for the purpose of receiving full-time education.
In order to show a relevant connection with the European Union you must:
- be a national or the child of a national of a member state of the European Union (the student should be either under 21 or dependent on EU national parent) and;
- have been ordinarily resident in the European Economic Area or Switzerland for the three-year period before the start of the course. For courses starting in September 2010 the relevant date is 1st September 2007, for courses starting in January/February 2011 the relevant date is 1st January 2008 and;
- none of this period of residence can have been wholly or mainly for the purpose of receiving full-time education. You may also be exempted from the higher rate fee if:
- you, your spouse or parents have been officially recognised by the United Kingdom Government as a refugee and have been ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom and islands since being recognised as a refugee, or;
- you have been informed in writing by the United Kingdom Government that you have been granted Exceptional Leave to Remain, Humanitarian Protection or Discretionary Leave and have been ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom since, or;
- you are a European Economic Area migrant or Swiss worker or the spouse or child of a European Economic Area migrant or Swiss worker, or;
- you are an exchange student.
