The Creative Writing Summer Show 2018 will celebrate the exciting new work in poetry, fiction, screenplay and creative nonfiction produced by students and staff of the School of English at Birmingham City University over the past year.

The Summer Show will launch Journeys, this year's anthology of new creative writing from the School of English, which will be on sale at the event. The anthology is edited by a committee of MA Creative Writing students - this year Emily Crowther, Rhiannon Fidler, Leila Howl, Jack Roberts and Madison White - under the expert guidance of Alan Mahar, former Publishing Director at Tindal Street Press. We are honoured and delighted that for 2018, Sir Lenny Henry – Chancellor of Birmingham City University – has given an exclusive interview for the anthology with Professor David Roberts, Dean of the Faculty of the Arts, Design & Media, on his own experience of the pleasure and value of reading and writing.

The Summer Show will feature readings by students from the anthology, a wine reception and a talk by our special guest for evening, Helen Cross. Helen is the author of four novels, including My Summer of Love which won a Betty Trask Award and became a BAFTA award-winning film directed by Pawel Pawlikowski. She has recently adapted her novel, Spilt Milk Black Coffee, for producer Rebecca Gilbertson at Rainy Day Films. Her short stories have appeared in various anthologies and magazines, including most recently The Manchester Review. Her radio dramas, which are regularly broadcast by the BBC, have been shortlisted for several major awards including Best Audio Drama and The Innovation Award, both in the BBC Drama and Music Awards. Her audio drama about the women’s world cup was broadcast as an episode of From Fact to Fiction on BBC Radio 4 in July 2015. Ministry of Women, her graphic novel, created with and illustrated by Carol Adlam, was published in June 2016. Helen was Radio Dramatist in Residence in the School of English in 2016-17. Helen is a Visiting Lecturer and Fellow of the Institute of Creative and Critical Writing at Birmingham City University.

This event is one of the highlights of our live literature calendar, and a testimony to the energy, diversity and imagination that characterises the creative writing programme in the School of English. We look forward to welcoming you.

The Creative Writing Summer Show is part of Birmingham City University's Inspired Festival, showcasing the talent, dynamism and achievement of our students across the arts, design and media.
