Skills and Simulation Centre

skills and simulationsThe Skills and Simulation Centre was officially opened by the Lord Mayor of Birmingham in 2011. Facilities such as the ward areasmock theatre and the home environment allow students to practise their skills in a safe, simulated environment that mirrors the real-life health and social care arena.

The Centre is staffed by the academics and technicians of the Department of Skills and Simulation. The department was an NMC pilot site in 2006 to evaluate the effectiveness of simulation in nurse education, and was the 2011 winner of the Health Education Academy’s learning and teaching team award for student support and collaboration. The staff have a wealth of clinical experience, a strong research profile, and expertise in employing contemporary educational theory to the teaching and learning of clinical skills.

Cutting-edge equipment

The Centre makes use of the most cutting edge of equipment, including SimMan and SimBaby, and audio-visual technologies to capture and replay students’ simulation learning activities. Staff within the centre have also developed a range of e-learning and online activities to enhance the students’ acquisition of new clinical skills.

The Centre supports all courses which the Faculty of Health offers and provides an invaluable bridge between the theory and practice elements of a course or programme. In particular, it helps courses/programmes to adopt simulation activities into their teaching and learning strategies through the DASHEd course. Additionally, the Centre’s facilities are available to hire and so closely reflect real-life environments that they have been used as sets for film and TV productions.
