Irfan has over 12 years teaching experience including in mainstream Primary and Secondary schools, Higher Education, and internationally in South Africa. Prior to teaching, Irfan worked in schools as part of the Extended Schools Programme in a Multi-skills Community Sports Coach role and has experience of organising high-profile school and community charity events. Within his teaching capacity, Irfan went on to become Curriculum Coordinator for Key Stage 5, before becoming Head of Department. In addition to this, Irfan has delivered a range of INSET teacher training sessions and is often invited to give keynote addresses on his PhD specialist area of research focusing on Children’s Physical Activity, and Mixed-Methods.

Irfan has a diverse range of coaching qualifications and has delivered a range of guest lectures at different institutions, nationally and internationally including The University of Westminster in London, The Hague University in The Netherlands, and Queen’s University in Kingston, Canada.

Irfan is one of the early members of department and was responsible for the design and validation of the original BSc (Hons) Physical Education and School Sport degree as Birmingham City University expands its portfolio of degree courses, and has developed a new Department of Sport and Exercise. Irfan currently acts as a mentor for new Course Leaders as they design and validate programmes of study. Irfan also currently supervises two PhD students.
