Big Green Debate

Grrreen:

Birmingham City University are strongly committed to developing a sustainable future through our teaching and learning, research and partnerships with industry with the aim of influencing future generations.

The University has established a wide variety of relationships with industry and is well known for its creative expertise as a design centric university.

Birmingham City University are always looking to think creatively about the issues that mean most to the wider community and the students learning experiences.

Birmingham City University are committed to the three R's, Reuse, Recycle and Reduce. Our campuses are well equipped with waste management processes.

Birmingham City University is one of the first universities in the country to commit to reducing the amount of construction waste it sends to landfill.

The University's City Centre Campus Project has signed up to the WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) with an aim to significantly reduce its land fill waste. This means that WRAP have set targets to reduce the amount of construction, demolition and excavation waste sent to landfill by 2012 in the UK.

The University continues to work with partners including Birmingham City Council, Birmingham Forward and Birmingham Future to engage with the wider public.

Transport:

Birmingham City University aims to make students and the wider community aware of how they can become greener in their everyday lives.  As part of this initiative the University has commissioned Atkins to assist in the development of a Sustainable Transport and Travel Plan.  The Plan will be informed by significant data on both students and staffs travel patterns and will be widely consulted upon before the Plan's implementation.

It is envisaged that the Plan will address such issues as an overall car parking strategy, travel and transport between the University sites, home working, travel on University business, walking to work, cycling to work, information to assist in a greater use of public transport and the setting up of a car sharing club.

The Strategy will play a significant part in achieving the University's Policy of reducing its carbon output by 25% and it is hoped that the approved and adopted document will be in place by October/ November 2009.

City Centre Campus:

Birmingham City University are looking to design a sustainable campus in Birmingham City Centre on New Canal Street to show their commitment to becoming a green University. The new development will set high sustainability standards that are supported by the City Council and Advantage West Midlands.

Birmingham City University's objective for the learning environment development is to create a new facility for our students across the areas of Media and Performing Arts, Technology Innovation and Development and Art and Design by using a new campus.

The city centre campus will have fully operational television studios, a library, a media hub, a design hub, music recital hall, lecture theatres and a learning resource centre.

The new campus is due to be complete for academic year September 2013.
