Course Director, BA (Hons) Textile Design
Following a first class honours degree in Printed Textile Design and an MA in Book Art Kate Farley has developed a practice spanning the field of art and design, completing site-specific commissions in surface design, producing a large number of artists’ books, and series of works on paper. She has taught for a number of years at Central Saint Martins, London, and currently teaches Textile Design at the School of Fashion and Textiles, part of Birmingham City University.
Kate's work has been shaped by an appreciation of space, simplicity and colour inspired by landscape, both rural and urban. She responds to place, site history and memory, primarily through drawing and printmaking. Kate challenges her own perception of three-dimensional space in two-dimensional form and explores elements of perspective, elevation and scale. Kate has launched a collection of hand-printed textile and paper products inspired by the concept of home-grown, with a narrative of 'Plot to Plate'.
