Hi my name is Erin Swan and I am a first year student on the Conductive Education course here at Birmingham City University (BCU).
Preparing to start uni is very exciting, but can be overwhelming too - I remember how I felt when I was in your shoes. Below I have put together some tips to make your transition to uni life as smooth as possible and hopefully ease any anxieties you might have.
I have discovered more about Birmingham and attractions local to Moseley – I personally love visiting the Midlands Art Centre (MAC), which is just next door, plus there are lots quirky bars and restaurants to enjoy.
My favourite thing about studying here is that we are based at The Conductive College in Mosely which is a dedicated space for this subject. It is filled with facilities and learning resources specifically for students on this course, which I love and at the same time we get full access to BCU facilities and campuses which are all over Birmingham City Centre.
The best thing about Birmingham is that there is A LOT to do! Of course you have everything you could need and want in the centre, but also right next door to campus is Canon Hill Park which is great to enjoy all year round - and the Moseley Bog.
The course can be demanding and require a lot of multi-tasking at times, but just remember to enjoy every moment. I would advise everyone to keep on top of revision and assignments and find a way that suits them to organise lecture notes, reading and any assignments – I like to keep a folder for each academic year for lecture notes and divide the folder into the modules and notes in date order.
I didn’t know that we had access to all of BCU facilities as well as The College’s which has been a real benefit. Also, I didn’t realise how rich the learning environment would be here, Birmingham is so diverse and you get to meet some amazing people.
Coffee, my student card and a good fiction book to dive into when I need a break from doing work.
