Profile: Leon Barrett, 23
BSc (Hons) Multimedia Technology (now renamed as BSc (Hons) Digital Media Technology)
Why did you choose the course?
When I toured the School, I was impressed with the range of facilities and course content offered. It appealed to me because there were both elements that were familiar to me and others that offered a new challenge.
Best thing about the course?
The web development and multimedia creation courses – this provided the basis for pursuing a career as a web developer, specialising in Flash and PHP.
Immediately after completing studies, I worked at the University as a Technology Transfer Consultant, where I was developing Flash applications and creating websites using appropriate web technologies learned on the course.
After that, I moved to another area and worked as an eLearning developer, using the Actionscript skills that I learned in the Multimedia Authoring section. It entailed creating interactive eLearning content for distance learning courses. I also assisted in the delivery of the eCommerce application module.
What are you doing now?
After working at Birmingham City University in various roles for 18 months, I moved to a multimedia agency creating content for the NHS, Highways Agency and Becta, a Government agency promoting the use of information and communications technology.
I have also created bespoke eCommerce applications and web-based file sharing applications.
I want to gain as much experience in industry as possible and then make a move into lecturing in a relevant web technology field.
