Overview

Student Case Study

Tina SwaniEven while she was studying a Diploma in Management Studies and an MBA at Birmingham City Business School, Tina Swani knew that she wanted to work in an environment where people matter and where she could apply the principles of business. She is now the CEO of Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice which, since its launch in 1979, has cared for tens of thousands of people with conditions such as cancer, motor neurone disease, heart disease and multiple sclerosis.

“My diploma and MBA were instrumental in me getting to the position I’m in now. Many charity CEOs have an MBA or an MSc because the demands of the role require someone with clarity of strategic vision and an ability to work with people.”

The Birmingham City Business School MBA. We focus on improving you as a manager, rather than simply teaching you about management.

Emphasising the development of practical management skills, the MBA offers you the opportunity to study alongside, and share cross-cultural insights with people from other countries.

The study of course modules is complemented by Enhancing Business and Management Skills, which offers a series of workshops and other activities to develop the attributes, personal skills and research skills valued by organisations. Students explore how they can be more effective in the workplace and evidence their strengths as business professionals. All students complete an e-portfolio, articulate project management skills and address the challenges of future employment.

You have access to academic and administrative staff to assist your studies, careers advice; Business School resources and a range of supported IT equipment; as well as the services of the Faculty librarian.

A range of educational methods are used on the course, such as lectures, group discussions, case study workshops, individual investigative projects and a variety of audio and visual methods.

The 12 month course is run over four terms, the first three consisting of 12 weeks each and the fourth lasting for eight weeks.

Please note, a January start is also offered on the MBA programme and the structure offers three exit points at Certificate, Diploma and Master’s level.

MBA students earn high-speed prize

First on the exam podium: Birmingham City Business School MBA students at Jaguar Land Rover vehicle testing centreHere at Birmingham City University we believe excellence should be rewarded – and six MBA students enjoyed life in the fast lane following a great performance in the Business Processes examination. They spent a day at the Jaguar Land Rover testing centre in Warwickshire – which involved driving through simulated desert conditions and reaching speeds of 150mph!

The students were taken onto the high-speed test track in a brand new Range Rover Vogue, Land Rover Discovery 4, Jaguar XJ and Jaguar XFR – and were some of the first people in the country to see the new Range Rover Evoque at close quarters. They were also taken on a drive around the world-renowned off-road testing track.

The event was organised by alumnus Andy James, who is Business Development Manager for Business Protection at Jaguar Land Rover, and he hopes the prize can become an annual event.

He said: “Jaguar Land Rover works with Birmingham City University to not only reward excellent performance but also to provide experience of organisational life. The search for the very best talent continues and this provides an insight to the most capable of students.”

Course Outline

Course Structure

Drawing on many actual case studies and emphasising the practical application of accepted theory, the Birmingham City Business School MBA is a challenging, innovative and respected course that gives you a comprehensive understanding of organisations, the external environment in which they operate and how they are managed.

It offers an understanding of advanced theories, concepts and methods related to the functional aspects of business and management, how to apply relevant techniques to the solution of business and management problems, and how to critically evaluate their utility in practice.

Supported by the expertise and real-life experience of lecturers and guest speakers, you consider specific issues such as the strategic impact of operations and process management; the supply network and how it is configured and managed; resource planning and control; as well as inventory and quality management.

With businesses facing increasingly unpredictable and complex environments where ongoing change is the norm for both organisations and individuals, you consider organisational dynamics and culture, approaches to change, characteristics of a good leader, and issues of change and sustainability.

The course explores strategic analysis, development and implementation. It covers crucial topics such as the external environment and the role of culture in the delivery of strategy. It also investigates developing competitive advantage through resource and market-based opportunities; as well as issues linked to the process of managing the strategy process.

The vital area of entrepreneurship is considered in depth, allowing you to look at entrepreneurial activity in a local, regional and international context. You explore family and non-family businesses, issues in business start-up and sources of finance. You also examine business plans from research to design to implementation.

Not only that, you gain knowledge of the vital relationship between governance and risk, allowing you to provide high quality assurance on the effectiveness of risk management in the context of good corporate governance.

Finally, you will be able to apply the skills of data collection, analysis and synthesis to form defensible conclusions and, where relevant, appropriate recommendations in a 10,000 word dissertation on a chosen research topic.
