Horology is the study and production of timekeeping devices, both mechanical and electronic. This HND course will teach you theoretical and practical skills appropriate for watch and clock making and restoration. In your first year you’ll look at the theory of mechanical timekeeping, workshop practice and measured drawing. In your second year, you’ll study these subjects in greater depth as well as considering complex automatic watches, chronographs and calendar watches.
Course Outline
Course Structure
During the course you will undertake a major project spread over the two years, comprising the design and construction of a complete clock or watch of your choice. To complement the major project, a design workshop is provided to enhance your design awareness. You will also compile a series of professional portfolios of repairs and restorations to clock and/or watches to develop your skills and abilities.
A photographic workshop forms part of these studies to enhance presentation techniques and record your work. A complete module is devoted to the History of Art and Design and you are encouraged to undertake the British Horological Institute’s professional examinations at the end of both the first and second year.
