Gemmology is the study and identification of gemstones and gemmological materials, whether natural, synthetic or artificial. This two-year gemmology diploma course follows the syllabus of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain, and successful candidates can register for Fellowship. This is a highly regarded and prestigious gemmology qualification, recognised both in the UK and worldwide.

You'll undertake both theoretical and practical studies during the Gemmology Diploma course using a specialist laboratory equipped with the most advanced gemmology equipment available.

Payment and Enrolment

To confirm a place on the course, you must pay the course fees in full during enrolment before the course starts. Enrolment will take place at the School of Jewellery on the following dates:

  • Monday 12 – Thursday 15 September, 10am to 6pm
  • Friday 16 September, 10am – 4pm.

Additional costs

You may need to pay an additional amount for professional examination fees. Information will be available at the start of the course.

Year 1 - £1000 tuition fee + Gem-A fee.

Year 2 - £1750 tuition fees + Gem-A fee.

Our Facilities

Assay Office

Our gemmology students are based in new, state-of-the-art premises at 1 Moreton Street in the Jewellery Quarter with access to the highest specification of equipment available for gemmological education within the UK. You'll use diamond-testing equipment at Assay Office Birmingham's AnchorCert Gem Laboratory.
