Our Fashion Media Management MA course provides you with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in the ever-growing, always-competitive fashion industry.

We focus on the role of media in the marketing and promotion of fashion, helping you gain a technical understanding of the sector, as well as a solid foundation in management principles.

What's covered in the course?

You will develop your overall understanding of the modern fashion industry, as well as the necessary skills for working in the sector.

The industry looks for passionate, knowledgeable people when it comes to employment, so with this in mind, we will give you valuable insights into the subject. You will look at the fashion supply chain, global fashion perspectives, ethical fashion and how brands are promoted, established and maintained, among others.

By studying Fashion Media Management, you will be trained to perform a number of managerial roles within the fashion media industries, giving you a winning edge when it comes to getting a job. You’ll cover fashion advertising, social media, fashion marketing strategies, online and traditional magazine publications, project management, freelance employment and much more.

You’ll learn how to maximise market penetration and consumer value, receiving training in marketing and communications. You’ll sharpen your research skills to enable you to apply them to different product strategies, evaluating visual merchandising and how to product different fashions effectively.

Our course covers all the topics you’d need to become successful in the fashion business, from strategies that inform fashion marketing and branding, right up to articulating trend forecasting. This broad approach ensures when you will graduate you’ll be able to perform a number of roles in a competitive, worldwide industry.

Entry Requirements

You are required to meet one of the following options:

UK students
Essential

An honours degree from a UK University

A first degree from an overseas university (GPA 3.0 out of 4.0 or average 75 per cent or any other equivalence to the above UK qualification)

Successful passing a Pre-Master's course approved by Birmingham City University

Successful passing a Pre-Master's course at another UK university/institution with a minimum of 55 per cent average

Other qualifications will be considered on a case by case basis.

 

Please note that even if your application fully meets the entry criteria, you may be required to further demonstrate your suitability via an interview or submission of a course proposal before being offered a place.

Interviews may be conducted in your country of residence, over the telephone or by Skype.

Stage 3: Masters

On this stage you will complete a research project, where you will investigate and write about a topic that you have a long-held interest with, as well as supplying a research proposal detailing what you’re aiming to find out during your project.

You will study the course full-time for one year. Assessments are an integral part of the learning process, and it’ll take on various forms within the modules, including coursework assignments, reports, controlled assessments, exams and your final dissertation. Formative feedback will be provided by students through a combination of self-reflection and tutor and peer feedback.

Subject specific modules for this course include a lecture and seminar programme, a portfolio of concepts and treatments and a portfolio. You will also work on a dissertation, where you can write about a relevant a subject you enjoy in much greater depth. This will require a lot of research, which we prepare you for with strategy meetings informing you how to get the most out of the research you do.

You’ll have lectures, as well as smaller group seminars where you’ll analyse case studies. Short, post-lesson ‘fact’ tests will be made available over Moodle, with discussion and interactive sessions will encourage you to critically examine key elements of business and management.

The course generates career opportunities in fashion manufacturing and production, fashion studio management, fashion brand management, fashion supply chain management and research.

We are constantly investing in our estate and are currently in the process of spending £260 million on new learning facilities.

The Parkside Building is part of our new multi-million pound City Centre Campus development in the heart of Birmingham's Eastside development.

Home to the Birmingham School of Architecture, School of Fashion, Textiles and Three-Dimensional Design and School of Visual Communication, the five-floor site is packed with fashion design workshops, studios and social 'collision spaces.'

The campus also provides extensive workshop space, and the very latest in industry-standard equipment reflecting the broad range of study opportunities on offer.

You will have access to Vicon 3D, an external tracking motion capture facility, and Gypsy, an exo-skeleton-based motion capture system to extend the many possibilities for production of 3D animation and films.

There's also a comprehensive range of tools and machinery in the wood and metal workshops.

Meet our staff

Jasbir Kaur

Jasbir is Deputy Director of Postgraduate Programmes in Fashion and Textiles and has extensive experience in commercial textile design and magazine production. Her work is published internationally and she has specific research interests in South Asian fashion.
