A degree or equivalent qualification.

If you do not have a degree you could still be considered through our APEL procedure which looks for evidence of being able to benefit from, and succeed on the programme through your management experience.

You should also occupy (or have occupied) a position of management responsibility for a minimum of two years.

Stage 2: PG Diploma in Management Studies

The modules here focus on strategic issues, investigating management and how to lead and manage change. This builds on the first stage and takes you to the position of being able to complete the final stage for your MBA. There are four modules in this stage which are Thinking and Managing Strategically, Leading and Managing Change, National Consultancy Project and Contemporary Issues – Research Journal.

Stage 3: MBA

This final stage in the progressive programme is focused on demonstrating application of your knowledge and skills. There are three modules in this stage which are Exploring Organisational Performance, International Consultancy Project and Management Research Project.

The International Consultancy Project will involve overseas travel, for which limited expense funding up to £500 will be made available from the course fees. You will undertake an international consultancy project for a chosen organisation, gaining good understanding, awareness and creating positive solutions.

How You Learn

We ensure the course is flexible enough to substantially fit around work. Modules are a mixture of classroom and blended online learning, with the whole course being practice-based. Classroom attendance is scheduled for one afternoon per week running into the evening, allowing it to fit with work and personal commitments.

Businesses change and grow in order to keep ahead in the competitive global environment. In this course, you’ll look at the successful management of change, analysing the process within organisations.

Throughout the course, you will gain a wealth of intellectual skills as well as management knowhow, both essential when it comes to effective management roles. Initially, you will be given a detailed introduction to the study of business, getting to grips with the methods needed to be a successful manager.

As you progress, you will gain a higher level of understanding and awareness, and you will be able to apply strategic planning and decision-making to improve different organisations. You will explore the management of people, whether they be customers, competitors or employees, all within the context of the international business environment.

Our Facilities

We are constantly investing in our estate and are currently in the process of spending £260 million on new learning facilities.

The Curzon Building

This course will be held at our newest facility, The Curzon Building, part of our City Centre Campus.

The £63 million building provides you with a unique learning space, featuring plenty of informal ‘break out’ areas available, creating an open, sociable atmosphere. There is also a new home for the Students’ Union, with its location moving to the restored Victorian pub The Eagle and Ball. Both City North and Millennium Point libraries have moved to the new building.

The dedicated social learning spaces ensure you’ll have the perfect facilities to work independently and confidently, having the time and support you need.

All this ensures that The Curzon Building is a vital support hub and a true central location for students in Birmingham City Centre.

Associate Professor

Martin’s previous roles include Director of Marketing for Zurich International Solutions Europe and Director of Investment Business for Centrica, Financial Services (British Gas, Goldfish and AA). He has delivered consultancy across multiple sectors where clients have included Aviva Investors (Global), Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, Ford Europe and many more.

Anne-Marie McTavish is a leading expert in Location Independent Working and Technology Enhanced Flexible Working. She leads the Department of Management, HR and Enterprise within Birmingham City Business School.

Dr Steve McCabe

Director of Research Degrees

Having graduated from the University of Manchester in 1984 with a degree in management, Dr McCabe spent time in industry as a management trainee before commencing an EPSRC research-sponsored MSc in Management at Birmingham University in 1988.

Since 1989 he has been employed at Birmingham City University as a management lecturer (teaching general and human resources, as well as strategy and operations but with a special emphasis on TQM, improvement techniques and benchmarking).

As well as teaching, Steven  is an active researcher and completed a Ph.D on a part-time basis at the University of Birmingham which explored the use of quality management techniques. He has written extensively on the subject of management and quality and has produced numerous papers, chapters for books and three books (see publications tab). He is currently working with Professor John Sparrow on a HEIF project (‘Development of value-adding business support need diagnostic: Timeliness and focus of business/management business development support’) which is exploring the way in which small and medium-sized businesses make key decisions about future direction (strategy). In particular the research aims to identify the nature of factors that contribute to what are known as ‘tipping points’.

Dr Martyn Brown

Senior Lecturer in Organisation Studies and Coordinating Director of Post Graduate Framework Degrees

Dr Martyn Brown has a background in engineering but also spent four years as a professional musician. He has worked in engineering consultancy and events management in the voluntary sector and has carried out marketing consultancy on the West Bank. He holds an MBA from Aston University and a PhD examining the rise in interest in spirituality in the workplace.

His current lecturing activities include organisation studies, research philosophy, business strategy and business ethics. He has also lectured in marketing and international marketing.

Dr Vikram Finavker

Lecturer in Finance

Dr Vikram Finavker is a Lecturer in Finance at Birmingham City Business School. Vikram holds a PhD in Finance from Middlesex University. Prior to joining Birmingham City University Business School, Vikram worked at Nottingham University, Coventry University College and Middlesex University.

Vikram also holds a master's degree in Research Methods for Business and Management and Banking and Finance.
