Our Digital Media Computing course is an intellectually challenging and highly rewarding programme that will prepare you to meet the professional and technical demands of industry.
In the first year you will learn underlying principles of computer science, as well as visual design and human computer interaction, bringing these together through a collaborative innovation project.
During the second and third year of study you will explore more in-depth the areas of web application development, digital media processing, media production and 3D modelling and animation. You will have opportunities to work on real world projects through a major group project in year two, as well as undertaking an individual project in the final year.
You will develop key transferrable skills, such as teamwork, reflection and self-awareness. You’ll also gain analytical skills through coursework tasks, as well as enhancing your problem solving using a range of systems and technologies.
You will have the option to undertake an industrial placement after your second year, gaining valuable work experience, and on the course you'll acquire skills in web technology, programming, animation, 3D modelling, video production, human-computer interaction and interface design to develop web and interactive digital media applications.

This introductory computer programming module will provide you with the knowledge and practical skills to design, build and test software components. This module will give you the skills you’ll need to develop an effective web-based information system, based around a clear understanding of the visual requirements of an interface, a structured design approach and the technical skills necessary to build and implement a website.
Information Retrieval/Database Design
Data structures and algorithms are essential in computer science, software engineering, computer games and graphics programming. Data structures are structured representations of data; the design of a data structure determines how operations such as reading to, writing from, modifying, or computing with the data can be achieved. An algorithm is a procedure or set of instructions which can be followed by a computer in order to solve a computational problem.
This module will equip you with essential background knowledge about common data structures and algorithms. It will develop your skills in writing them and understanding their efficiency and correctness. You will cover topics such as arrays, lists, sets, queues, stacks, graphs and networks, as well as how to write and analyse algorithms.
This module will also prepare you for future programming projects, and develops knowledge and skills necessary for employment in software development, game development, computer graphics, and related fields.
Computer Network Fundamentals
This module will give you the opportunity to learn the skills required in building and designing a basic network, and the requirements of a network infrastructure. This module builds on the knowledge and underpinning theory of networking systems.

This first year project allows you to develop and cultivate a creative mind set through collaborative innovative practice, allowing you to bring together knowledge and imagination to construct a viable product. It is an opportunity to express your ideas, skills and talent to the wider community of innovative practice.
The project provides you with an opportunity to be part of a thriving community of innovators that practices connected learning. We facilitate this by putting you into an inter-disciplinary project team supported by innovation mentors, advisors and academics, culminating in you exhibiting your work to an international panel of experts.
This semester-long project will challenge you and your team through an iterative process of requirements capture, ideation, concept design, development and rapid prototyping to deliver a functional proof-of-concept.
Web Application Development
The vast majority of web applications are connected to databases for the purpose of storing and retrieving information. In this module you will be introduced to relevant concepts and technologies, applying them to the development of such applications. You will gain knowledge and skills in data modelling (entity-relationship models) and relational database implementation and administration (using SQL). You will also acquire new programming skills (e.g. writing server-side scripts in PHP) in order to produce applications that provide useful functionality.
Digital Media Processing
Developing a mastery of the fundamental concepts for processing digital media into novel applications is essential within the field of digital media computing.
The digital media processing module will focus on the methods, techniques and theory for acquiring, processing and transferring digital audio, digital image and digital video data. All of these underpin many digital media applications ranging from mobile applications through to interactive games, healthcare applications and also mixed augmented and virtual reality. Throughout the module you will develop the skills to process, analyse and critique digital media information alongside the use of suitable sensor technology to create innovative digital media products.
The skills you’ll learn here will allow you to work with audio and video content throughout the course.
You will develop expertise in the capture and manipulation of audio/video data through practical experimentation. You’ll need a sound understanding of technical concepts in order to deliver realistic solutions to a broad range of real-world problems that you will encounter.
Multimedia Group Project
In this module you will participate in a small structured team to design, produce and test a multimedia product. The module allows you to build upon the experiences gained during the innovation project undertaken in your first year and to consolidate the additional knowledge you have gained in Year 2. This project provides the opportunity for a substantial piece of work, researched and executed in depth and with professional quality.
You will be involved in group tutorials and skills workshops, as well as workshops to support project management and effective teamwork.
3D Modelling and Animation
This module will develop your skills in the production of 3D models, renders and animations for use in a variety of different media and platforms.
The philosophy of the module isn’t to make you an expert in one particular area of modelling, rendering or animation, or expert in a single tool, but to develop a range of skills and a wider understanding of how to use 3D models within digital media.
You will learn to produce 3D models and geometry which are textured, animated and rigged, then export them for use in other platforms, such as video, web and games.
You will be able to utilise the skills that you have developed in this module to produce and work with 3D content in a variety of different scenarios.
Cloud Based Web Services
In this module you will cover topics and technologies related to Cloud Computing.
You will explore solutions and learn design principles for building large network-based systems to support both computation- and data-intensive computing across geographically distributed infrastructure and develop an application using cloud services.
Topics include resource management, programming models, application models, system characterisations, and implementations. You will also get an insight into deployed Cloud Computing systems, such as Amazon EC2 and S3, Microsoft Azure, Google AppEngine, Google’s MapReduce, Yahoo’s Hadoop, and many other systems.
CEBE Undergraduate Project
This module will enable you to undertake a sustained, in-depth and research-informed project exploring an area that is of personal interest to you and aligned with the programme you are studying. You will research a topic, then design and produce an artefact which will then be critically evaluated. You will work independently with the assistance of an academic supervisor.
This module is an opportunity for you not only to develop academically, but also to acquire life-long skills and key attributes that are expected by industry.
Creative Visualisation and Animation
This module will provide you with the technical comprehension necessary to organise, manipulate, and enhance video data at both the point of capture and in post-production ready for delivery.
You should be able to precisely specify settings and develop workflows based on knowledge of video compression and software requirements, as well as enhance the visual image through grading and compositing.
The module will be practice-led, utilising industry tools and technologies in order to design and deliver productions at a professional quality. The module allows you to further develop skills gained in the Video Production Technology and the 3D Modelling and Animation modules while applying technical knowledge to produce media artefacts.
Cross Platform Media
In this module, you will develop productions that span a number of platforms such as film, games, social media, web and VR. It provides you with an opportunity to work with students from a number of disciplines and develop an understanding of how your knowledge and skills can fit into the production workflow of different media industries.
You will identify the future of digital (non-theatrical) distribution via the use of cross platform narrative development (Transmedia) within, for example, the film, gaming and visual effects industries. There will be opportunities to contextualize the current state of the industry by explaining current distribution models and trends and underpinning this with the technology needed to deliver this content.
Within this framework, the concept of user-generated content will be explored using various digital delivery channels; the assessment will be your production and delivery of a transmedia campaign.
This module will enable you to gain an understanding of the processes, scope and role when providing guidance or advice in a professional consulting capacity. It will also assist you if you join a larger organisation with the aspiration to become a leader and manager. The module provides an awareness of the wider consulting profession and practice, the consulting role in computing, and the management of client relationships. The focus will be to analyse and evaluate the frameworks, processes and techniques applied by computing consultants, managers and leaders.
The module will instill in you the mind-set of a practitioner. Starting with the founding phases of contractual projects, you will work with life-like ambiguous scenarios, progressing form here to help resolve client problems and address business objectives.
Lectures are used to introduce themes, theories and concepts, which are further explored in tutorials. Technology-enhanced learning is used, where appropriate, through the provision of online resources, discussion forums and other activities. Textbooks are used, together with professional material and journal articles, in order to ensure that students develop a critical understanding of work in their discipline. The module guides direct students to a full range of resources, including books and journals, as well as specialised course-based material.
Analytical and problem solving skills are further developed using a range of appropriate 'real' and 'theoretical' case studies, plus a range of problem-based learning scenarios. Practical, including lab-based, sessions are used throughout the programme to develop practical skills and to place theory in a work-related context. Where appropriate, you will also use commercial development environments.
You will develop the key skills of research, academic writing and time management required for study at degree level throughout your first two years of study, which will enable you develop them further on the final-year individual project.
Transferable/key skills are pervasive and incorporated into modules and assessments as appropriate. For example, team-working skills are fostered via group activities. You are encouraged to plan your own work schedules and are required to meet deadlines. Reflection and self-awareness are fostered throughout.
A range of assessment methods are employed, assessment criteria being published in each assignment brief. Knowledge and skills are assessed, formatively and summatively by a number of methods, including coursework, examinations (seen and unseen, open and closed-book), presentations, practical assignments, vivas, online forums and project work.

Jerry is a Lecturer in the School of Computing and Digital Technology, he joined the University in 2005.
Jerry has 30 years’ experience in telecommunications research and development in intelligent networks, data communications protocols, interactive services, media distribution, broadband access and services development, defence communications contracts, network architectures and infrastructures.
During this time his research involved a number of collaborative projects between industry and universities for UK government funding and also for European framework funding. Research projects included industry/academic collaborative projects on networked virtual reality applications, intelligent agent-based e-commerce markets and adaptive services, information services and infrastructures.
Jerry has presented papers and spoken at a number of highest level international conferences and events and instrumental in a wide range of international collaborative work programs.
