Paul Mayes

Paul Mayes studied trumpet and piano at the Royal Academy of Music and later in the USA with Wynton Marsalis and Adolph Herseth inspiring his passion for teaching and developing trumpet and brass pedagogy. His Scientific Embouchure Design System brings physics, physiology and design together in a unique and innovative way and has led to an international following within trumpet and brass communities. Paul is also Head of Brass at the Perse school Cambridge and Professor of Trumpet at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama.

As an international soloist and Shires Trumpet Artist, Paul has given recitals and solo performances in the USA, Australia, Europe, United Arab Emirates and throughout Great Britain. He has also performed as soloist with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Britten Sinfonia and English National Opera and in 2014 gave the world premiere of Richard Bullen’s Concerto Scenes from a Tragedy with the LSO Chamber Ensemble. The Independent described his playing as ‘distinguished & breathtaking’and the Brass Herald cited that ‘Paul’s mastery of the trumpet family is astonishing’. His YouTube videos have attracted over one million hits including internationally acclaimed recordings of Arban Characteristic Studies.

Paul has given masterclasses at many institutions including Purchase College New York, Royal Academy of Music, University of Illinois, Beijing Music Conservatory and a series of lectures as Artist-in-Residence at Queens University in Belfast. In 2007 Paul launched the first BBC Proms Brass Day event with a workshop to 280 brass players showcasing his multimedia trumpet publication You Me and a Trumpet as featured in BBC Music Magazine and on BBC Radio Four.

 Throughout his career Paul has appeared as Guest Principal Trumpet with many orchestras including the London Symphony Orchestra and has also performed with ensembles Onyx Brass, London Brass and LSO Brass Quintet. He has played Lead Trumpet in West End Shows including Cats, Phantom of the Opera, Evita, Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music and has been a member of Superbrass since its founding in 2005.

Paul has extensive experience in the studio recording over one-hundred film, television, and gaming software soundtracks including Catching Fire, The Great Gatsby, Les Miserables, James Bond - Skyfall, The Hobbit, Call of Duty, Hunger Games, Kung-Fu Panda 2&3 and Gravity, as well as performing on commercial work with Hozier, Florence and the Machine, Peter Gabriel, Sir Paul McCartney and Josh Groban.
