Enjoy performances from two small bands coached by New York City guitarist Steve Cardenas.
The legendary Birmingham Monkathon returns for a staggering 9-day event to mark the centenary of Thelonious Monk.
You can hear Monk's entire repertoire across the city at a variety of venues by a wide range of groups, projects, guest artists and soloists.
New York guitarist Steve Cardenas (transcriber of the famous Monk Fake Book, and alumnus of Charlie Haden's Liberation Orchestra, Paul Motion's Electric Bebop Band, and the John Pattitucci Quartet) teams up with our fantastic jazz musicians for a gig at the Spotted Dog, he will adjudicate the jazz department’s student Arranging Prize, and performs with Hans Koller's group, Thelonious for a concert at the CBSO centre.
Hailing from Paris Conservatoire we welcome Professor François Théberge and a group of his students who will work with UK piano star Liam Noble.
Other highlights include a gig by Arnie Somogyi's Jump Monk at the Red Lion, supported by his student project, various outreach activities, and a symposium entitled Being Thelonious featuring a key note presentation by the eminent Monk scholar and biographer Robin Kelley.
Monkathon 2017 brings together students and staff from the jazz department, international soloists, our Erasmus partners, Alumni, JazzLines, Birmingham Jazz, and the Jazz Research group of ADM.
Join us to experience the talent, creativity and ingenuity of our final year students as they leave the university and launch their careers.
