Elgar Enigma Variations

Elgar dedicated his famous work ‘to my friends pictured within’, with each variation a musical sketch of a close acquaintance including his wife Alice, his publisher and indeed Elgar himself. The ‘enigma’ of a hidden melody is a puzzle which continues to generate much speculation.

This Repertoire Orchestra concert opens with two concertos for instruments lesser-heard as soloists with orchestras, here tonight performed by musicians from Royal Birmingham Conservatoire’s Advanced Postgraduate Diploma course.
