Public Research Seminar: Crossing Over Into Khyāl: A Western Musician's Journey Into North Indian Classical Music
Public Research Seminar Series

What does it mean for a Western musician and musicologist to learn the musical practice of another culture?
For some years now David Clarke (Professor of Music, Newcastle University) has been learning the North Indian classical vocal style known as khyāl in the traditional guru–disciple tradition with his Newcastle-based teacher Dr Vijay Rajput.
In this talk Professor Clarke will explore the significance of this experience from several perspectives: its musical demands, its cultural implications, and its research dimensions – including autoethnography as a possible model for making sense of it all.
