Develop skills as a teacher or community musician by taking one of more of the following Professional Development options at postgraduate level.

Teaching Matters

  • A 10-hour lesson observation placement with Services for Education Music Service including the opportunity to do some unassessed teaching and receive feedback from a professional mentor
  • Five hours of observation in additional educational contexts
  • Weekly lectures and workshops covering a comprehensive range of issues in instrumental/vocal teaching to include first lessons, motivation, practice, notation, sight-reading, technology, creativity and aural-based approaches, group teaching, planning and assessment, special needs, learning styles, performance preparation, teacher-pupil-parent relationships, business matters and safeguarding.

Instrumental/Vocal Teaching Placement

  • A nine-week placement (one day or equivalent per week) with Services for Education Music Service where you spend time both observing and teaching and receive ongoing feedback to help you further develop your skills. Teaching Matters is a pre-requisite for this module.
  • Occasional classes to share work in progress and assist in lesson planning and preparation.

Music, Community and Wellbeing

  • Up to 10 hours' observation of professional practitioners delivering workshops in at least two contrasting settings.
  • Weekly lectures and workshops introducing theory and good practice in relation to the use of music in therapeutic and community contexts. Students will spend much of their time working in pairs to prepare material and practise presentation skills for use in community settings before delivering four workshops themselves.
