Tammy Yeshua

BSc (Hons) Computer Science

After coming to Birmingham City University through Clearing, Tammy found that the course provided her with an in-depth knowledge of IT, which she was able to put to good use with a placement at technology giant IBM, which helped to build her technical and personal skills.

"Throughout my education, IT has been a common theme which I wanted to pursue further. Looking at the Computer Science course description, I believed I would be able to tap into my technical potential, and studying this course provides me with a range of opportunities to expand my technical skills and broaden my horizons.

"The structure and content of the course was extremely in-depth and I knew that the skills and experiences being taught would ensure that I was able to explore a variety of areas within my field of study in the future. Computer science can be a challenge at times; however I have thrived on these challenges and continue to develop not only my technical skills, but also my personal ones.

"My placement with IBM exposed me to corporate culture where I could learn how to build, create, manage, or support a corporate network, software development or other IT project. The huge advantage of a placement is getting to engage with industry professionals in ways that new employees may not typically do, and at the same time get valuable training. Several of my personal skills have improved considerably, such as my confidence and presentation skills, which I am hugely grateful to IBM and my team for.

"In the future, once I have completed my degree, I hope to return to IBM and be a part of the Graduate Scheme and the further opportunities that IBM have to offer. My advice that I would give to future students would be to continue to work hard and keep a strong relationship with all your lecturers; ensure that you plan ahead and, in the event that you require additional help, do not hesitate to ask – all lecturers will be more than happy to help. I also highly recommend taking a placement year; you gain invaluable experience, opportunities, are able to network with talented brains and have a foot in the door for your future."
