Enterprise Systems Management is an innovative MSc degree course designed for those who want to pursue careers as managers and leaders in implementing technology-based information systems solutions and managing technological transformation within organisations.
You will explore systems and activities within an enterprise that bring together processes, people and technology, you will support digital transformation strategies, and help streamline operations to gain competitive advantages, improved performance and reduced operational costs.
Systems management processes can be applied in retail, banking, travel and telecommunications businesses as well as in manufacturing. Enterprise Systems management is also useful for any size of business – from local SMEs to large multinational organisations.
The course modules are directly relevant to industry's current and expected future needs. You will consider the socio-technical aspects of business management including managing strategic IT change and improving business processes. Building good customer relationships is highlighted throughout the course.
The academic content of the course is complemented with practical workshops - you will work with SAP systems, which are based on a virtual industry, to apply your learning. The Master's Project will allow you to apply your skills and knowledge to practical problems and investigate an Enterprise Systems management research topic.

Studying a postgraduate course usually means you want to specialise in something. So what’s driving you?
Show that you’ve researched the course offering. What is it about this particular course that appeals to you? Is it the lecturers? The modules? Etc.
Tutors want to know that you can handle postgraduate study, so show them how your undergraduate experiences or work life has equipped you for a more advanced level of study. Key areas to address are research and group work but this can vary depending on your chosen course.
Add anything relevant that relates back to your chosen course and shows how your skills will contribute towards your learning. What extra-curricular activities have you taken part in? Business Intelligence and Technology Entrepreneurship
Business Intelligence has enabled both entrepreneurs and established organisations to gain competitive advantage, and highlighted opportunities in both new and existing markets. Here, you will gain practice-based skills through the application of a variety of tools and techniques relating to entrepreneurship and Business Intelligence, including the use of software data analytics. You will be expected to write business plans and support your ideas through Business Intelligence strategies. This will significantly enhance your written, oral and visual communication skills, and your ability to use the World Wide Web to effectively communicate project ideas and plans.
This module equips you to develop core skills and knowledge to support organisations in the management of Enterprise Systems and business process change, integrating different processes, people and technology to help streamline operations. You will be given a case study of an industrial challenge which you will then apply theories to as you create an Enterprise System – a set of interconnected activities and processes working in cohesion to achieve a particular goal. You will gain practical, hands-on experience to provide an in-depth understanding of Enterprise System functionality that complements and enhances the theoretical perspectives.
Managing Strategic IT Change
Explore the interdependent relationship between people, processes and technology to deliver enterprise solutions which exploit information and IT in a constantly-changing international context. A range of socio-technical factors driving organisational change will be considered in terms of how they affect the performance needs of an organisation and influence organisational efficiency gains. Short lectures will provide you with an overview of key topics and concepts, which will then be applied to small group activities and workshops. You will be supported in developing your skills throughout, with weekly tutor feedback through analysis of activity completed.
The module aims to provide you with the ability to analyse, design and develop an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system. Materials Requirements Planning (MRP I), Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRPII) and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) are core ERP technologies that have migrated from manufacturing industries to the service sector. You will learn to analyse the use of capacity planning and scheduling tools and techniques within the operational environment, and evaluate the concept of business process improvement. You will also critically appraise the use of mathematical modelling and simulation tools with the operational environment and supply chain, and provide a solution to a typical business process improvement scenario.
Principles of Project Management
Project management is the application of processes, methods, knowledge, skills and experience to achieve objectives. Projects can range from construction of a new building to the launch of new product, or from outsourcing previous in-house functions to the re-engineering of products, services and processes. This module will deal with the two main stages of any project – planning and implementation. You will critically analyse project management methodologies and tools, evaluate approaches to human resource management for a successful project, assess the role of quality and risk management in the delivery of successful projects, and evaluate the usefulness of current tools and software.
Strategic Information Systems Management
This module explores why and when strategic planning is essential to organisational success, especially during times of ever more rapid technological change. You will learn about the significant advances – along with tools, techniques and ways of thinking – that align Information Systems (IS) strategies with business strategy to facilitate the deployment of innovative digital solutions. The module provides you with the knowledge and skills that can help you to design and develop effective strategies to manage IS as an integral part of the strategic management process, ensuring that organisations gain the benefits and avoid any pitfalls in utilising IS.
Individual Master’s Project
You will undertake a sustained, in-depth and research-informed project, exploring an area of personal interest to you. In agreement with your supervisor, you will decide on your topic which will take the form of a practical outcome (artefact) with accompanying contextual material. Your topic must be aligned to the programme you are studying and informed by the research strategy of your school. You should also consider the relevance of this topic to your future academic or professional development. You are expected to work independently but will receive additional one-to-one support from your supervisor, who will be familiar with your chosen topic area.
Our teaching philosophy revolves around you both ‘learning by doing’ and also transferring acquired knowledge to others. Activities will be conducted both individually and in teams, with tutors providing leadership and mentoring aimed at supporting your transition into independent learners. In this partnership, we will be encouraging you to become proactive, so that you can develop your confidence to undertake a range of progressively complex and challenging tasks.
We expect you to attend all teaching sessions, as well as to read and prepare before these sessions. Good preparation will enable you to get the most from your contact time and will help you become an autonomous learner. Advanced preparation is also a critical skill which you must develop if you wish to succeed in business or professional practice. Teaching sessions will include lectures and small group interactive seminars.
You will be assessed in a number of different ways, including coursework, patchwork assessment, examinations (seen and unseen, open and closed-book), presentations, practical assignments, vivas, online forums, podcasts and project work.

There are a number of open access, software development and computer programming
laboratories that can be used to develop systems and programmes, including database management systems such as MySQL, to name but a few.
Our embedded systems laboratories are used to develop real-time systems, such as specialist hardware training and development resources, and industrial-standard software development and simulation tools. These include microcontroller software and robotics design and development, to name but a few.
Our successful development of forensic computing has led to a specialist forensics laboratory that is fully equipped with essential hardware and software for this sensitive area of study. The laboratory includes high-spec PC’s with built-in multi interface Tableau write blockers, EnCase and FTK computer forensic software and steganography detection and analysis software, to name but a few.
