Creative Industry

Our excellence in the arts means we have exceptional links with the creative industries.

Birmingham Institute of Art and Design (BIAD) has forged strategic links with a range of design and interiors led businesses through the formulation of Trends, a national publicity vehicle built around UBM’s internationally recognised interiors exhibition. The programme, now in its fifth year, has led to new long-term strategic partnerships with leading international brands including Tektura WallcoveringsNatural History Museum and Global Color.

Ten MA Product Design students from BIAD were given the challenge of designing a cast iron night storage radiator for AGA, the UK’s number one brand in premium range cooking. Read how they tackled the student design challenge.

Automotive Industry

In the automotive field, students have been involved in projects ranging from designing component systems for off-road karts to environmental projects with legendary car maker Morgan Motor Company, working on the company’s LIFECar and biodiesel development.

The Faculty of Technology, Engineering and the Environment’s partnership of over 10 years with Morgan was recognised as ‘Best Partnership North West’ at the 2010 national Knowledge Transfer Partnership awards. Read more about the Morgan Motor Partnership.

Information Technology

The University has also launched a groundbreaking new Institute of Innovation for Enterprise Systems in collaboration with the University Alliances division of German-based global industrial software giant SAP and Birmingham City Council, the world’s largest local authority user of SAP enterprise systems software. Read more about the SAP partnership.

Health Sector

The University has partnered NHS Walsall Community Health in a 12-month Knowledge-Based Partnership (KBP) to help its management explore how 'Lean' principles could be successfully transferred into provision of its diverse and disparate services. The project resulted in improved efficiency for patients and stock costs reduced by 60 per cent.

Gaming Industry

One exciting new initiative from NTI Birmingham (New Technology Institute) is Gamer Camp.
