You will learn how to ensure construction projects are delivered to the satisfaction of the client and other construction professionals and influence a better future in the built environment.

Here are the key areas you’ll need to address:
Studying a postgraduate course usually means you want to specialise in something. So what’s driving you?
Show that you’ve researched the course offering. What is it about this particular course that appeals to you? Is it the lecturers? The modules? Etc.
Tutors want to know that you can handle postgraduate study, so show them how your undergraduate experiences or work life has equipped you for a more advanced level of study. Key areas to address are research and group work but this can vary depending on your chosen course.
Add anything relevant that relates back to your chosen course and shows how your skills will contribute towards your learning. What extra-curricular activities have you taken part in? What awards have you won? What employment or voluntary experience do you have that has helped you develop transferable skills? How do these specifically relate to the course you are applying for?
You should also mention your future plans and how a postgraduate qualification fits in. Try to look beyond your postgraduate study – do you plan to jump straight into a specific career or follow your studies with a research degree? There are no compulsory additional costs or charges associated with studying on this course. While you may choose to purchase personal copies of text books, all our key text books are available from our library or online (subject to normal library loan and online access arrangements). If your course includes a residential study session, the accommodation costs for this are already included in your course fee.

Integrated Project Delivery
In this module you will take a production process view of design, construction, and operation, examining developments in effectiveness and efficiency, and how these can be managed and applied to construction projects. Key aspects of the module include design and construction management; integrated procurement strategies; managing human and technological resources; BIM processes, standards and their implications on construction projects; creating and executing plans using workflow and responsibility matrices. You will consider concepts such as transformation, flow, and value creation in order to develop fundamental intellectual and technical skills, as well as an understanding of the notion of integrated project delivery.
This module will explore how analysis, measurement, and interpretation of construction projects and resources can inform and assist with cost control and adding value. You will learn how detailed analysis of professional relationships, costing techniques, buildability, design economics, and procurement using IT technology can ensure high quality presentation of costing information through the quantification processes. Real-life examples and exercises will provide you with an in-depth knowledge of how advanced interpretation of technical drawings, construction plans, and the associated technology can be applied to inform and assist in cost control of building and civil engineering projects.
Construction Law and Contract
This module will provide you with an understanding of construction contracts, their application and execution, and the legal aspects of working in construction. You will examine the issues and opportunities that arise in construction project management, as well as the legal and organisational factors at play in the industry. Studying real-life projects and case studies, you will explore forward-thinking approaches to identify and apply best practice to problems in construction projects, particularly relating to commercial and contractual aspects, and you will develop interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills to prepare you for managerial roles.
In this module you will develop an appreciation of data analysis and data presentation in relation to the cost management processes involved with construction. The financial, analytical, interpretative and teamwork skills you will develop will be fundamental to your degree and your future career. This module is designed with a ‘whole life’ approach to construction economics, looking at the financial aspects of client, contracting, and consulting roles in the industry. Through a range of lectures, seminars, and practice-led workshops, you will explore risk awareness and risk analysis in the built environment, taking into account the global nature of the construction industry.
In this module you will explore the effect that construction activities have on the environment, and examine the environmentally sound construction methods and innovative management practices that are required to work sustainably. You will develop your awareness of sustainable construction through evaluating industry responses to climate change and sustainability, critically reflecting on what constitutes good practice, and developing creative solutions to the challenges faced. This module will give you a rigorous grounding in the fundamentals of organising and managing construction projects within the changing global construction industry, enabling you to become a more capable, creative, reflective, and critical construction professional.
Project Management Methods
This module explores various methods of project management within the context of construction. You will learn about the practical aspects of the development and construction process, and in particular, those areas over which a project manager would expect to have some control. Themes such as project specifications, programming, costings, stakeholder management, risk assessment, and project control are addressed, and practical solutions are explored. Lectures from industry experts will introduce the latest practices and discuss topical issues, and collaborative group workshops will foster a strong global perspective and intercultural experience.
Individual Master’s Project (Dissertation)
This project is the culmination of your Master’s study; using your previous studies and current modules as a foundation, you will carry out research into a practice-based problem, and develop your ability to theorise and conceptualise. This project will allow you to build understanding and expertise in a selected area of specialised study relating to construction and project management, providing you with a good foundation to build a career in the area that most interests you. In the first semester you will explore research methods that will guide your project, and you will then work with your assigned supervisor to develop your ideas.
The teaching for this course puts you at the centre of learning and teaching, with a particular focus on the reflective learner and the development of professional skills and applied research. The course team use lectures, seminars, workshops, action learning sets, group work, problem based activities, guest speakers, on-line learning via Moodle, a study trip and discussion forums to deliver learning.
Critical thinking is vital in Master’s study, and you are required to develop your own ideas and come up with solutions to problems based on solid evidence and logical analysis. You’ll also be expected to complete reading and assignments outside of class hours.
Part-time students attend lectures on a day-release basis, and share the modules with full-time students.
The course is fully accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). Successful completion of the course will lead to Professional Membership after the Assessment of Professional Competence (APC).

Hong obtained his BEng in Industrial and Civil Buildings in 1985, and MSc in Construction Management in 1988 from Hunan University, China. He lectured there until 1998. He came to Britain in 1998 as an academic visitor sponsored by the Chinese Government, and then began his PhD study at the University of Wolverhampton. His PhD research project was ‘A Comparative Study of Contractor Performance Based on Japanese, UK and US Construction Practice’, and he obtained his PhD in 2002.
On June 2003, Hong joined the Birmingham City University as a Research Assistant to conduct a DTI sponsored research project, ‘An approach to knowledge management for SMEs’. Upon the successful completion of the research project, he moved to a lecturing post and has been teaching and researching since.
