Birmingham City University was recently rated as a rising star institution, with the highest percentage of work rated as 'world leading' compared to any other modern university in the UK. Research is organised across 13 Centres of Excellence.
At BIAD research plays a central role and covers a wide range of interests in art and design. Interaction between staff, students, industrial and professional partners brings vitality to a wide range of projects.

You can access our research and academic expertise in a number of ways:
- Contract and Collaborative Research: You can commission our academics to undertake contract bespoke research that is designed to meet your business requirements. Alternatively, you can sponsor research students in an area of interest to your company. This may include areas outside of the BIAD.
- Research Degree Programmes: BIAD offers a range of master's and doctoral studentships in Design and Fine Art. Courses can be tailored to meet the needs of your organisation and in many cases are linked to specific postgraduate programmes, enabling delegates to gain credits towards a postgraduate certificate or diploma.
- Masters and Doctoral Studentships in Design and Fine Art: Courses can be tailored to meet the needs of your organisation and in many cases are linked to specific postgraduate programmes, enabling delegates to gain credits towards a postgraduate certificate or diploma.
