Areas of Expertise
- Database theory and technology
- Information retrieval
- Pervasive computing
- Context aware computing
Mike has successfully supervised over 10 research students and has examined PhDs at a number of UK universities. He has been involved with a number of research conferences most notably the British National Conference of Database series, the Object Role Modelling Workshop and the International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Applications. He was General Conference Chair of the International Conference on Data Engineering in 1997 and Finance Chair for the Very Large Database Conference in 1999. For many years he was on the International Editorial Board of the journal “Information Software and Technology” and is currently a member of the Editorial Board of the “International Journal of Space-Based and Situated Computing”. Mike is a member of the BCS Board of Examiners and also the Academic Accreditation Committee.
BSc (Hons), MSc. FBCS, C.Eng, CITP
- Chartered Fellow of the British Computer Society
- Chartered Information Technology Professional (CITP)
- Chartered Engineer (C.Eng)
- Member of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)
Mike's initial research interests centred on database technology in particular the incorporation of additional semantics into the relational model of data. Following the invention of the world wide web, he became interested in issues related to locating information on the web and in particular search engine technology. He led a research team responsible for the development of the Wolverhampton Web Library (WWLib). This was also reflected in contributions to the EU Framework 5 funded project ‘Webocracy’ which had the aim of “empowering citizens with innovative communication, access and polling system, supporting increased participation in democratic processes”. Since taking a post at Birmingham City University, Mike’s research has focussed on pervasive computing and the development of context aware software systems.
Mike's current area of research is in brain scan analysis.
