Accommodation Services operates a Student Representative scheme, whereby your resident student Rep, already a student at Birmingham City University, will be on hand to facilitate your introduction to Halls and University life, and to assist with any problems you may encounter during your stay.

Each room in the accommodation has a telephone line, the services of which are provided by an independent company. Phone rental is free and students are required to pay for outgoing calls only. It is necessary to register in order to receive this service. Details can be collected from the Accommodation Manager’s office. As this is an independent service the University is not liable for any problems with, or withdrawal of the telephone service.

It should be noted that rents are subject to an annual increase, to take effect on 1st September.

All the Halls of Residence have CCTV and security staff patrol the campuses 24 hours per day. Accommodation Services staff are available at all sites during office hours to assist with any queries you may have. (Monday to Thursday 0900 - 1700 and Friday 0900 - 1600).

Halls of Residence and University Owned Houses are managed centrally by Accommodation Services and we provide a comprehensive and responsive service. Our commitment to quality is reflected in our ‘Investor in People’ status.

Eligibility for accommodation

Applicants for accommodation are guaranteed a room in Halls of Residence for their first year of study providing they have accepted an offer on a full time course at Birmingham City University, do not live in Birmingham and apply by the start of the Autumn Term.

This guarantee does not apply to students who apply through clearing, however the department will endeavour to make an offer of accommodation to students who apply through clearing having regard to the location of their permanent home in relation to Birmingham together with date of application.

Applicants who do live in Birmingham and meet the above criteria will be made an offer of accommodation subject to availability.

When and how to apply for accommodation

When you have firmly accepted a course offer at Birmingham City University you can apply for accommodation. There is an application form on this website that you can complete.

To apply for accommodation you will need your student ID number which can be found on your offer paperwork from your faculty – it has 3 alpha and 8 numeric characters, the first 3 letters of your last name and 8 unique numbers.

You will need to know your choices of accommodation, please read through the details on this website.

Allocations policy

  • Applications are processed in order of the date they are received

  • We cannot guarantee that you will be allocated your preferred Hall.  Priority for on-campus accommodation is normally given to applicants who will be studying at, or closest to the site concerned.

  • If there are medical or mobility factors which have a bearing on your accommodation needs, please provide full details and supporting evidence at the time of application to enable us to allocate appropriately. You may also wish to contact the Disability Services team at Student Services for advice and assistance.

  • With the exception of the studio flats at Hamstead, which can accommodate couples and one child under the age of three, all other study bedrooms are designed for single occupancy. Larger family units are advised to contact property owners on the Private Sector List to enquire whether they have anything suitable in their portfolio.

  • It is not possible to designate smoking and non-smoking flats as their status cannot be sustained if vacancies arise during the year. Smoking is not permitted in Cambrian Hall. Smoking is only permitted in other accommodation in designated study bedrooms.

  • Allocations for September commence in June. If you are awaiting exam results your offer of accommodation will be processed after the grades are confirmed.

  • Offers of Accommodation will be posted to your home address. If we do not receive a response by the deadline stated (7-10 days for UK students), the offer will be withdrawn. Please advise us in advance if you will be away from home (e.g. on holiday) for more than a fortnight at a time.

  • You will need to provide your own cutlery, crockery, cooking utensils, bedding and towels. Further information can be found in the Information Handbook section below.

  • The accommodation contract is for a minimum 40 week period from September to June inclusive. Students whose academic year continues into July/August can apply to extend their stay when vacation booking forms are issued at the end of the Spring Term.

  • Students whose courses run for only one semester will be offered a contract from September until late January or January until late June inclusive. This is the minimum booking period applicable.

  • You will be able to move into Halls during the weekend before your course starts. Details of when and where to collect your keys will be sent out with the offer package.

Termination of agreement

If you formally withdraw from or take interruption of study, your liability for rent continues for a 6 months notice period unless the room is re-let in the meantime to an eligible student of Birmingham City University ( i.e. who is not already contracted to the Department and whose conduct/payment history is acceptable). Written confirmation of withdrawal from or take interruption of study is required from the relevant Faculty.

If you move out of University owned accommodation but are still enrolled on your course you will continue to be liable for rent for the duration of your agreement, unless the room is relet  to an eligible student of Birmingham City University in the meantime. You are ultimately responsible for finding a replacement student for your room however we will assist by passing on your details if we are approached by students seeking accommodation.

The circumstances in which the University may terminate the agreement are detailed in full under Section 4 of the contract but  examples include

  • overdue payment  ( the student  will continue to be liable for rent until the room is re-let )

  • serious or persistent breach of the student’s obligations as set out in the  agreement

  • if the student does not have status as a registered student of the University

  • if the health or behaviour of the student is believed to constitute a serious risk  to him/herself or others or the University’s or other people’s property.

  • if the accommodation or access to it is sufficiently damaged as to be unfit for habitation.

Charges for accommodation

The accommodation charges are calculated annually as part of the University budget process which is managed by the Vice Chancellor and approved by the Board of Governors.  Charges for accommodation are determined by the policy that halls of residence should break even and the charges should reflect all costs including borrowing and sufficient funds for the estate to be maintained to a reasonable condition.

All the annual rents shown are based on a minimum 40 week contract.

Because there are so many accommodation sites and different sized and priced rooms in them, the best place to look for actual prices is on the Halls of residence pages themselves:
